Big Announcement

So I have some news. I have a lot of mixed emotions about this and it was a very difficult decision to come to, but As the Grass Grows is going on hiatus for a while. There were a lot of factors that brought me here. The list of things I’m working on has been growing and is bringing with it a stress level that I need to get under control. I also have a couple projects that I’ve been really wanting to bring to the front burner that I’m just not able to. I feel like I’ve put in a nice long run with Gnorm and it’s time for a break.

So how long will “a while” be? Honestly I’m not sure. All I can say right now is that I will get back to it at some point. This project is the first time that I’ve actually stuck with a comic for this long and these characters have a special place in my heart. I purposely left the last strip with a cliffhanger to make sure I come back and pick it up. In the meantime, you can use your imagination to see what sort of fun Gnorm is about to get into. And for more info about what I’ll be up to during the AtGG hiatus, check out part two of the big news over on my blog. So for now there are two comics left (at the time of this writing, tomorrow and the 25th).

Thanks again to everyone who’s been reading the strip and offering encouragement along the way. You all are awesome and I hope you’ll come back when the strip resumes.

So today’s strip marks 250. That’s a pretty big milestone for me. I wanted to again thank all of you who are reading this comic. If you’ve read all 250, then I want to give an extra big thank you! It’s the kind words and support from you guys, my friends and family and especially my wife that keep me motivated to put the time in when life gets crazy.

If you haven’t read all 250 strips, there’s a great way to get caught up. You can get the first 140ish in the digital download in the store for just $2.

I wanted to take a minute to join the millions of people saying thank you to all the men and women who have served or are currently serving in the US military. I’d also like to say thanks to the families, whose sacrifices aren’t as obvious but are just as significant. You all make it possible for us to do the little things we take for granted every day and we can’t say thanks enough.

Change to the Comic Schedule

As much as I’ve been trying to avoid it, I’m going to have to make a change to the update schedule of As the Grass Grows. Starting this week I’m going back to one comic a week. I’ve come to realize that multitasking is not a strength of mine and with all of the things I have going on right now along with my crazy schedule at my day job, I don’t think I’ll be able to keep up a two strips a week schedule.

So for the foreseeable future, new comics will post every Monday. As always, thanks for the continued support.

Irregularities

I apologize for the irregularities in the update schedule lately. Unfortunately, I can’t do much about them at the moment… my day job (the one that pays the bills) needs me to put in some extra time to get through a rough spot until we can hire someone to help me out. So if you know anyone that’s a user experience/user interface designer in the baltimore or northern virginia area, let me know

Until then the comics will probably keep posting on irregular days. The best way to make sure you don’t miss any comics is to subscribe to the rss feed. As always, thanks for the continued support.

So I got an iphone. After playing with it for over twenty-four hours now I’ve realized the only thing wrong with it was the complete lack of gnome-ness so I had to correct that. I put the pdf of Gnonsense on it (did you know you can buy it from the store for only $2) and I also decided to make a background for it (that’s what it looks like there to the right). You can download the full size version here if you want it. If you need a different size for a different phone or anything let me know and I’ll make one.

Upcoming Events

I’m going to be attending a couple events over the next couple months. First is the Pittsburgh Comic Con on April 16th and 17th. The show actually starts on the afternoon of the 15th, but I won’t be able to make it until Saturday. I’ll be there with my brother Dave and our friend Jason Wright who is a colorist for a bunch of books from DC Comics and is a pretty awesome painter. If you’re in or around Pittsburgh that weekend you should come to the Monroeville Convention Center and buy a book from me and some artwork from Jason. I’ll also be doing quick sketches for free and selling sketch cards for a small fee (probably $5). I may also be wearing a Baltimore Ravens hat, so you can see if I get punched in the head .

Next up is Free Comic Book Day on May 7th I’ll be at Comix Connection at the West Manchester Mall in York, PA. I’ll have books there to sell and I’ll also be giving out free sketches. Should be a lot of fun so if you’re in the area you should come and check it out. If you’re not in the area, you should still check out Free Comic Book Day at your local comic shop. Who doesn’t like free stuff, right?

The Illustrated Section

If you follow my twitter feed, you already know that my book, Gnonsense, is available as a digital pdf from The Illustrated Section, but I realized that I haven’t talked about it yet on the site.

It’s only $2 for 114 full color pages that you can read on your computer or ipad. If you’ve been thinking about buying the printed version, but that $10 (yes, it’s still on sale in the store) is too much for you, head over to the Illustrated Section. While you’re there, check out their other stuff too. They have some great books at really good prices – some free. Gnomeo and Juliet

So I haven’t had a chance to see it yet, but I’ve heard some interesting stuff about Gnomeo and Juliet. I’ve been trying to talk my 5year old into going but he’s just not interested. Despite the fact that he’s obviously a gnome aficionado. He keeps telling me we should just buy it on dvd – I’ve trained him well.

When I first heard about it, I had mixed feelings. On one hand if it’s good, it might make the demand for gnome-related entertainment go up (I know, how can it get any higher, right… we’re in a gnome renaissance) which can only help gnome-themed comic strips. But on the other hand, if it sucks it could potentially put people off of our pointy-hatted friends. After thinking about it a bit, the fact that decent money was invested to make a movie about gnomes has to be a good thing. I’ve heard mixed reviews about it, but it seems like a fun story… even if they got a lot of the facts wrong

So I’m looking forward to checking it out. If anyone has seen it, I’d love to hear what you thought.
