New Readers

As the Grass Grows follows the adventures of a neurotic yard gnome (Gnorm), convinced that he is the only thing standing between his realm (the yard) and annihilation. With his best friend Jack the dachshund (also known as “Short Legs”) Gnorm will do whatever it takes to keep his friends and his home safe. The voice of reason to Gnorm’s overactive sense for danger is Bob (also known as “Pink Bird”), a sarcastic and cynical pink flamingo. Bob attempts to keep things relatively quiet and normal in the yard so as not to upset the “Old Lady” who owns the house.

Gnorm was created by Brad Samuelson with help from his wife Sarah, with plenty of inspiration drawn from Brad and Sarah’s own backyard.

Cast

Gnorm

Gnorm

Waking up one day to find himself in a strange new world, Gnorm has dedicated himself to defending his new home. Gnorm is neurotic and slightly delusional, but his heart is in the right place.

Jack

Jack

Jack, also known as “Short Legs”, is Gnorm’s loyal sidekick. He’s easily excitable and doesn’t take much convincing to go along with Gnorm’s conspiracy theories.

Bob

Bob

Bob, also known as “Pink Bird”, is the ever frustrated voice of common sense and reason. His goal is peace and quiet, so Gnorm’s constant ramblings and warnings of imminent doom haven’t allowed them to connect as Gnorm would like. Plus he thinks Gnorm is an idiot.

Layla

Layla

Layla, also known as “The Lady of the Lake”, is the birdbath fairy that is the unattainable object of Gnorm’s affection. To his dismay, she never talks to anyone but the birds in the bath.

Mudge

Mudge

Mudge, also known as “Obese Cat” is the token overweight cat required in every legitimate comic strip. He’s the old lady’s house cat who is forced to spend time in the back yard to “get exercise”. In reality, he spends all of his outdoor time doing the same thing he does in-doors… which isn’t much of anything.

Gned

Gned

Gned is a rival gnome from the realm across the street. Gnorm and Gned don’t get along because Gned is a bit of an arrogant butt-hole. They have a history that goes way back to the gnomish homeland, but that is a sore spot for Gnorm.
